《白蛇傳》在中國廣為流傳，開始時(shí)是以口頭傳播，后來民間以評話、說書、彈詞等多種形式出現(xiàn)，又逐漸演變成戲劇表演。后來又有了小說，民國之后，還有歌劇、歌仔戲、漫畫等方式演繹。
到了現(xiàn)代也有根據(jù)《白蛇傳》拍成的電影，編排成的現(xiàn)代舞，新編的小說等。這個(gè)故事以《白蛇傳》的名字出現(xiàn)大抵出現(xiàn)在清朝后期，之前并沒有一個(gè)固定的名字。
《白蛇傳》不但在國內(nèi)流傳，在日本也有拍成的電影。法國漢學(xué)家儒蓮也曾將《白蛇傳》翻譯成法文。
