(一)古之學(xué)者必有師.師者,所以傳道受業(yè)解惑也.人非生而知之者,孰能無惑 惑而不從師,其為惑也,終不解矣.生乎吾前,其聞道也固先乎吾,吾從而師之;生乎吾后,其聞道也亦先乎吾,吾從而師之.吾師道也,夫庸知①其年之先后生于吾乎 是故無貴無賤,無長無少,道之所存,師之所存也.
譯文:古代求學(xué)的人一定有老師.老師,(是)靠(他)來傳授真理,講習(xí)學(xué)業(yè),解釋疑難的.人不是生下來就懂得知識(shí)和道理的,誰能沒有疑難呢 有了疑難而不向老師求教,那些疑難就始終無法解決了.生在我前頭的人,他懂得真理和知識(shí)本來就比我早,我應(yīng)該向他學(xué)習(xí);生在我后面的人,如果他懂得真理和知識(shí)比我早,我也應(yīng)該向他學(xué)習(xí).我(向他們)學(xué)習(xí)的是真理和知識(shí),哪管他們的年齡比我大還是比我小呢 因此不管地位貴賤,不管年紀(jì)大小,真理和知識(shí)在哪里,老師也就在哪里.

(二)嗟乎!師道之不傳也久矣!欲人之無惑也難矣!古之圣人,其出人也遠(yuǎn)矣,猶且從師而問焉;今之眾人,其下圣人也亦遠(yuǎn)矣,而恥學(xué)于師.是故圣益圣,愚益愚.圣人之所以為圣,,愚人之所以為愚,其皆出于此乎 愛其子,擇師而教之;于其身也,則恥師焉,惑矣.彼童子之師,授之書而習(xí)其句讀者,非吾所謂傳其道解其惑者也.句讀之不知,惑之不解,或師焉,或不焉,小學(xué)而大遺,吾未見其明也.巫醫(yī)樂師百工之人,不恥相師.士大夫之族,曰師曰弟子云者,則群聚而笑之.問之,則曰:"彼與彼年相若也,道相似也,位卑則足羞,官盛則近諛."嗚呼!師道之不復(fù),可知矣.巫醫(yī)樂師百工之人,君子不齒,今其智乃反不能及,其可怪也歟!
譯文:唉!從師學(xué)習(xí)的風(fēng)尚失傳已經(jīng)很久了!想要人們沒有疑難問題也就難了!古時(shí)候的圣人,他們(的才智)超過一般人遠(yuǎn)得很哪,尚且從師而求教;現(xiàn)在的一般人,他們(的才智)低于圣人也很遠(yuǎn),卻以從師求學(xué)為恥.因此圣人就更加圣明,愚人就更加愚昧.圣人之所以成為圣人,愚人之所以成為愚人,其原因不都是出在這里嗎!(人們)疼愛自己的孩子,就選擇老師教育他;但對(duì)于自己,就以拜師學(xué)習(xí)為恥,真是糊涂啊!那些孩子們的老師,是教孩子們念書,告訴他們學(xué)習(xí)斷句的,不是我所說的傳授道理,解答疑難的老師.讀書不會(huì)斷句,有疑難問題不能解決,(在這兩事中,)前者去請(qǐng)教老師,后者卻不去,學(xué)了小的,丟了大的,我看不出(這種人)是高明的.巫師,醫(yī)生,樂師和各種工匠,他們不以互相學(xué)習(xí)為恥.士大夫這一類人,一說到"老師""弟子"這樣的話,就聚在一起譏笑人家.問他們(為什幺笑),他們就說:"那個(gè)人與那個(gè)人年齡差不多,道德學(xué)問也不相上下,以地位低的人為師,就感到十分羞恥,以地位高的人為師,就近似于奉承巴結(jié)."唉!從師而學(xué)的風(fēng)尚之不能恢復(fù)就可想而知了.巫師,醫(yī)生,樂師和各種工匠,是士大夫們看不起的,如今士大夫的智能反而比不上(這些人),這不真是奇怪的事情幺!
(三)圣人無常師.孔子師郯子,萇弘,師襄,老聃.郯子之徒,其賢不及孔子.孔子曰:三人行,則必有我?guī)?是故弟子不必不如師,師不必賢于弟子,聞道有先后,術(shù)業(yè)有專攻,如是而已.
李氏子蟠,年十七,好古文,六藝經(jīng)傳皆通習(xí)之,不拘于時(shí),學(xué)于余.余嘉其能行古道,作《師說》以貽之.
譯文:圣人沒有固定的老師.孔子曾向郯子,萇弘,師襄,老聃學(xué)習(xí).而郯子這些人,他們不如孔子賢能.孔子說:三人同行,其中必有可以當(dāng)我的老師的.因此學(xué)生不一定不如老師,老師不一定比學(xué)生有才智,(只不過)懂得道理有先有后,學(xué)術(shù)技能各有專長罷了.
李家的孩子名蟠的,十七歲了,喜歡古文,六經(jīng)和它的傳文,全都學(xué)習(xí)過.他不受時(shí)俗風(fēng)氣的限制,向我來學(xué)習(xí).我贊許他能實(shí)行古人求師的正道,就作這篇《師說》贈(zèng)給他.。

古之學(xué)者必有師。師者,所以傳道受業(yè)解惑也。人非生而知之者,孰能無惑?惑而不從師,其為惑也終不解矣。生乎吾前,其聞道也固先乎吾,吾從而師之;生乎吾后,其聞道也亦先乎吾,吾從而師之。吾師道也,夫庸知其年之先后生于吾乎?是故無貴無賤,無長無少,道之所存,師之所存也。

古代求學(xué)的人一定有老師。老師是用來傳授道理,講授學(xué)業(yè),解答疑難問題的。人不是一生下來就懂得道理的,誰能沒有疑惑?有疑惑卻不求老師指教,那成為疑難的問題,終究得不到解決。在我之前出生的人,他懂得道理本來就比我早,我跟從他,拜他為師;在我之后出生的人,他懂得道理如果也比我早,我也跟從他學(xué)習(xí),把他當(dāng)作老師,我學(xué)習(xí)的是道理,哪里去考慮他的年齡比我大還是比我小呢?因此,不論地位顯貴或是低下,不論年長年少,道理存在的地方,就是老師存在的地方。
唉!從師學(xué)習(xí)的風(fēng)尚已經(jīng)很久不流傳了,想要人們沒有疑惑很難吶!古代的圣人,他們超過一般人很遠(yuǎn)了,尚且跟從老師向老師請(qǐng)教;現(xiàn)在的一般人,他們跟圣人相比相差很遠(yuǎn)了,卻以向老師學(xué)習(xí)為羞恥。所以圣人就更加圣明,愚人就更加愚昧。圣人之所以成為圣人,愚人之所以成為愚人,大概都是這個(gè)原因引起的吧?愛自己的孩子,選擇老師來教他。但是對(duì)于他自己,卻以跟從老師學(xué)習(xí)為可恥,這是糊涂的!那些兒童的老師,教他讀書,學(xué)習(xí)書中的文句,并不是我所說的傳授道理,解答疑難問題的老師。不知句讀(斷句),不能解決大道理的疑難問題;有的句讀斷句向老師學(xué)習(xí),有的大道理的疑難不向老師學(xué)習(xí);小的方面倒學(xué)習(xí)了,大的方面卻放棄了。我沒有看到他的明達(dá)。醫(yī)生,樂師及各種工匠,不以互相學(xué)習(xí)為恥。士大夫這類人中,說起老師、弟子的時(shí)候,這些人就聚集在一起嘲笑他。問那些嘲笑者(嘲笑他的原因),他們就說:"那個(gè)人與某人年齡相近,修養(yǎng)和學(xué)業(yè)也差不多,(怎么能稱他為老師呢?)以地位低的人為師,足以感到羞愧,稱官位高的人為師就近于諂媚。"啊!從師學(xué)習(xí)的風(fēng)尚不能恢復(fù),由此就可以知道了。醫(yī)生、樂師及各種工匠,士大夫之類的人是不屑與他們?yōu)槲榈模F(xiàn)在士大夫們的智慧竟然反而不如他們。難道不值得奇怪嗎?
圣人沒有固定的老師,孔子曾經(jīng)以郯子、萇弘、師襄、老聃為師。郯子這一類人,他們的道德才能(當(dāng)然)不如孔子。孔子說:"三人同行,其中就一定有我的老師。"因此學(xué)生不一定不如老師,老師也不一定比弟子強(qiáng),懂得道理有先有后,學(xué)問和技藝上各有各的主攻方向,像這樣罷了。
李蟠,十七歲,愛好古文,六藝的經(jīng)文和傳文都普遍學(xué)習(xí)了,不被當(dāng)時(shí)的不良習(xí)俗所限制,向我學(xué)習(xí)。我贊許他能遵行古人從師學(xué)習(xí)的風(fēng)尚,特別寫了這篇《師說》來贈(zèng)給他。

[11]師道:以師為道。即學(xué)道。道,這里有風(fēng)尚的意思。

[17]彼童子之師:那些教小孩子的(啟蒙)老師。
[18]句讀(dòu逗):也叫句逗。古代稱文辭意盡處為句,語意未盡而須停頓處為讀(逗),句號(hào)為圈,逗號(hào)為點(diǎn)。古代書籍上沒有標(biāo)點(diǎn),老師教 學(xué)童讀書時(shí)要進(jìn)行句逗的教學(xué)。讀,通“逗”。
[19]或師焉,或不(fǒu)焉:有的(指“句讀之不知”這樣的小事)請(qǐng)教老師,有的(指“惑之不解”這樣的大事)卻不問老師。“不”同“否”。此句翻譯時(shí)應(yīng)注意交錯(cuò)翻譯,詳見下文翻譯。
[20]小學(xué)而大遺:小的方面(句讀之不知)倒要學(xué)習(xí),大的方面(惑之不解)卻放棄了。 [21]巫醫(yī):古代用祝禱、占卜等迷信方法或兼用藥物醫(yī)治疾病為業(yè)的人,連稱為巫醫(yī)。《逸周書·大聚》有關(guān)于“巫醫(yī)”的記載。《論語·季氏》:“人而無恒,不可以作巫醫(yī)。”視為一種低下的職業(yè)。
